If you’re looking for a natural way to improve oral hygiene, you may want to consider oil pulling. The process has been used for thousands of years as an Ayurvedic practice and claims to whiten teeth, draw out toxins and even improve your breath.
Oil pulling is pretty straight forward: You swish coconut oil around your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes.

In The Know’s Phoebe Zaslav wanted to test it out herself to see if she noticed any short term results.
“The most low-lift way to oil pull is to literally just take a spoonful of coconut oil and just swish with [it],” she explained.
But Phoebe found a TikTok that showed a different way to oil pull, which involved making ice cubes out of the coconut oil.
What you’ll need:
- Coconut oil
- Ice cube tray
“I also read that if you really can’t stand the taste of coconut oil, you can sprinkle these with a little bit of cinnamon to make it taste a little better,” Phoebe added.

After you swish around a cube or two, spit out the rest into your garbage to avoid clogging up your sink’s drain.
“I have no idea if it worked or not,” Phoebe said after trying to oil pull. “My mouth just tastes like coconut oil … Like I said, I think is something you would have to do every time — maybe once or twice a month.”
As for Phoebe, this one experiment was enough.
“It was not my favorite thing,” she said. “But if you’re looking for natural remedies to strengthen your oral hygiene and you like coconut oil, then go for it.”
