Hi Group Chat,
I know sunscreen is important, but I’ve never really gotten into the habit of making it part of my daily routine. Sunscreen stans: What sunblocking products do you swear by? Also, what are some of the best sunscreens out on the market?
Sincerely, Sunscreen Son
Julia Webb, who won’t wear any sunscreen less than SPF 30, says: I have super fair skin, so I’ve been through my fair share of different sunscreens. Time and time again, two sunscreens always stand out to me — Coppertone Sport and Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen. I use the Coppertone Sport lotion all over my body, and it stays on really well without leaving my skin feeling sticky or greasy. (Also, I haven’t had any issues with it turning my tees or swimsuits yellow.) I use Supergoop! on my face because I have sensitive skin, and it never breaks me out or makes me look oily. It’s also a decent base under makeup.
I think once you find formulas you enjoy, it’s easy to incorporate them into your routine. To make sure you apply SPF daily, keep your favorite sunscreen next to your toothbrush or somewhere in your bathroom that you’ll see every day. Also, treat yourself to makeup with SPF in it to consolidate steps and still stay protected.
1. Coppertone SPORT Sunscreen, $7.97
2. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen, $17+
Jeanine Edwards, who knows that Black does, in fact, crack and burn, says: I generally take two approaches when it comes to sunscreen. Option one is to ball out on the most luxurious, expensive sunscreen I can find. This is a mind trick. If I’ve spent a lot of money on something, I’m more likely to use it, so I don’t feel like my coins are going to waste. The other option? Buy a facial moisturizer with SPF already included, duh!
When it comes to fancy sunscreens, I really love Glo Skin Beauty’s Oil Free SPF 40+ and Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen. They both go on smoothly, don’t leave any white residue and dry matte without leaving my skin feeling greasy or oily. My go-to facial moisturizer with SPF is Neutrogena’s Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 50 and Vitamin E. It’s lightweight yet moisturizing and doesn’t cause breakouts. It actually leaves my skin feeling soft, which is not true of all moisturizers with SPF.
3. Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer, $16.98
4. Glo Skin Beauty Oil Free SPF 40+, $38
5. Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 PA+++, $65
Ari Bines, who wears sunscreen on her face and body every single day, says: Sunscreen has gotten easier for me to use because I treat it as an extension of my skin and self-care routine (Plus, we’re beyond white cast sunscreen these days). Currently, I live for Black Girl Sunscreen. I don’t even spend money on highlighters anymore because this stuff gives skin a natural glow that no glow stick or highlighting serum could compete with. Plus, you can use it for your face and body. Also, if you find it hard to infuse sunscreen into your routine, I recommend the Everyday Humans Resting Beach Face Sunscreen Serum. It really does feel like a serum. It’s so easy to just add on top of your moisturizer in the morning.
For my body, though, the Eucerin Daily Hydration Cream that’s going viral on TikTok is my new personal favorite. I have dry skin, and this stuff hydrates and protects skin against sun damage. Not to mention, you get 8 fluid ounces for only eight dollars. It feels like a lotion, but without the greasiness, so sunscreens with multiple benefits can also help ease you into a regular application.
6. Black Girl Sunscreen, $15.99
7. Resting Beach Face, $24
8. Eucerin Daily Hydration Body Cream, $7.49
Moriba Cummings, who thinks sunscreen is one of the ABCs of life, says: I get it — though we know sunscreen is important, it’s not the most appealing skin care product in the lineup. But think about it like this – instead of classifying it as an optional skin care item, treat it more like an everyday necessity. Give it the same energy you give to staying hydrated throughout the day or taking your morning shower. Also, if you enjoy getting your money’s worth from the rest of your skin care products, you MUST wear sunscreen. Basically, nothing works as well without it, so you might as well make it a regular thing. The key is to simply find one that you know you’re going to want to wear. Once you’ve settled on that, it’s smooth sailing from there!
9. Green Labs Canna-B Pore Perfecting Serum Cream, $21.99
