We usually tend to focus on how the sun can damage our skin, often forgetting its negative effects on our hair.
UVA and UVB rays from the sun can damage the hair cuticle, the outside cover of each hair strand. The harmful rays can also cause discoloration, dryness, split ends, thinning and brittleness. You can usually tell if your hair isn’t in its healthiest state if it’s dry, unmanageable and difficult to style, according to Healthline.
Luckily, In The Know’s Phoebe Zaslav has got an easy three-ingredient deep conditioner that will instantly hydrate your hair.
“With the whole summer ahead, it’s important to remember we have to nurture our hair as much as we do our skin with SPF,” Phoebe says. “Sun exposure is actually just as detrimental to your hair as applying bleach. The UV rays weaken your hair’s protein structure, de-moisturize it and reduce elasticity so your hair breaks more easily.”
Ingredients:
- 1 overripe banana
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of honey
“Bananas are filled with potassium which helps to heal damaged hair follicles and vitamin a which helps strengthen the damaged follicles,” she explains. “Olive oil acts as a natural conditioner and honey helps to restore hair, smooth the follicles and add shine.”
The steps:
1. Just mix the three ingredients in a blender until it’s smooth and lump-free.
2. Next, apply the deep conditioner to your hair from the ears down. Phoebe says if your scalp is feeling dry you can apply the conditioner there too, but it’s not necessary.
3. Leave the deep conditioner on for 10 to 15 minutes. Then rinse well.
There you have it, with just three kitchen items you can quickly repair hair damage from those long days at the beach and picnics at the park.
