Social media reacts to woman’s ‘robot manicure’: ‘I’ve never seen anything like this’

A woman got a manicure by a robot and filmed the unusual experience for TikTok.

Elissa Maercklein shared a video of her visit to the newly launched nail lab Clockwork in San Francisco. She received a completely automated manicure — and it’s sparking conversation online. The clip racked up 7.2 million views on the platform.

“I got a robot manicure today for $8 in San Francisco and this is what it went like,” she captioned the video.

Maercklein, donning a face mask, sat on a stool and inserted her hand into a large purple machine. A tiny robot arm, wielding a nail polish wand, painted each fingernail a brownish-red. There didn’t appear to be any bells and whistles like nail filing or shaping, just a coat of paint.

TikTok users were intrigued by the potential new option.

“I’m so awkward at nail salons. This sounds incredible,” one person commented.

“Wow. I’ve never seen anything like this before! They look really good,” another said

“This is making my introvert self so happy,” someone wrote

Clockwork launched its first pop-up shop in June. The buzzy nail salon is said to be booked weeks in advance already. The contactless space has two machines that offer “pandemic-friendly” robot manicures. The equipment works by photographing customers’ nails and using sensors to determine the nail shape. It then paints one finger at a time, but at a much quicker pace than humans do. Both hands can be completed in less than 10 minutes time.

While nail technicians can offer more elaborate designs and routine nail maintenance, a robot manicure might come in handy when you’re short on time.
