Buying and selling plus-size clothes online is easier than ever — if you know where to look. The resale market is poised to double in the next five years, making it a whopping $77 billion industry. That, and the fact that the global plus-size market is valued at over $178 billion, means there’s a lot at stake for secondhand marketplaces that make it easy for plus-size shoppers to thrift used clothes online.
While there are plenty of retailers out there supplying vintage-inspired plus-size clothing — Modcloth, Unique Vintage and SheIn, to name a few — finding authentic vintage and thrifted plus-size pieces from the ’50s, ’90s and beyond is a bit trickier. Though today’s fashion industry still underrepresents plus-size bodies, the industry as a whole largely ignored plus-size consumers until the ’80s, which is why you might be hard-pressed to find truly vintage plus-size dresses, jeans, swimwear and more from fashion-forward decades like the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.
Still, a lot of the best places selling plus-size clothes take a creative approach to plus-size vintage. Many of the plus-size vintage shops on Etsy, for example, will upcycle thrifted clothing into trendy, wearable pieces for plus-size shoppers. Secondhand resale markets like ThredUp, Poshmark and Depop have a high demand for folks who are looking to sell their used plus-size clothing online for cash. For used and vintage plus-size designer clothes, The RealReal is a good starting point — but keep in mind that its plus-size offerings aren’t super robust because the designer fashion industry still largely ignores plus-size bodies.
For more, take a look below at our favorite places to buy used plus-size clothing online.
1. New Nostalgia on Etsy
New Nostalgia is a Virginia-based Etsy shop that specializes in secondhand “inclusive streetwear, grunge and androgynous gems.” If you’re looking for plus-size ’90s vintage clothing, you’ll want to bookmark this shop. You’ll find vintage treasures available in sizes XS to 4X and up. Browse more vintage finds from New Nostalgia.
2. Jazzy Outfitters on Etsy
Jazzy Outfitters is a Brooklyn-based Etsy shop that curates “party clothes in all sizes.” You’ll find everything from plus-size vintage dresses and jeans to swimwear and lingerie. Plus, 25% of the Etsy shop’s profits go to Mutual Aid. Browse more vintage finds from Jazzy Outfitters.
3. ThredUp
ThredUp is one of the fastest growing secondhand markets out there. It’s also probably one of the easiest places to resale your used plus-size clothing online. To sell on ThredUp, simply request a pre-paid Clean-Out Kit bag (or a pre-paid shipping label to attach to your own box), fill it with the clothing you want to sell, ship it back to ThredUp and wait for your payout to roll in. You can spend your payout immediately at ThredUp on new finds or get it cashed out via PayPal or a ThredUP Visa Prepaid Card within two weeks. To buy on ThredUp, create an account, input your preferred sizing and start browsing. You can save up to 50% on your first order when you sign up, too. Browse more used finds from ThredUp.
4. Bad Moon on Etsy
Bad Moon is a Seattle-based Etsy shop that curates “magical mid+plus size vintage” clothing in sizes large to 4X and up. You’ll find everything from plus-size dusters, coats and outerwear to dresses and matching sets straight out of the ’90s. Browse more vintage finds from Bad Moon.
5. The Curvy Elle on Etsy
The Curvy Elle is a San Francisco-based Etsy shop that specializes in vintage and modern vintage finds for plus sizes. Shop styles for sizes 12 to 24 and above like skirts, dresses and cardigans. Browse more vintage finds from The Curvy Elle.
6. Cereal Vintage Thrift on Etsy
Cereal Vintage Thrift is a Sacramento-based Etsy shop whose motto is “Recycle, Reuse, Recreate!” The shop doesn’t curate specifically for plus sizes, but you can filter for quite a few plus-size options via search. Whether you’re looking for vintage tees or cute rompers, there’s a lot to find. The shop even carries options for men, too. Browse more vintage finds from Cereal Vintage Thrift.
7. Copperhive Vintage on Etsy
Copperhive Vintage is a Salt Lake City-based Etsy shop that carries classic American retro and vintage pieces. While the shop does not specifically cater to plus-size vintage, there is a section dedicated to vintage plus-size pieces. You’ll also find a section called “Stuff We Make” that features upcycled pieces, repurposed fabrics and handmade jewelry. Browse more vintage finds from Copperhive Vintage.
8. Poshmark
Poshmark is perhaps the best-known clothing resale market out there, besides eBay. What makes Poshmark different from ThredUp is that on Poshmark, you handle uploading, describing, selling and shipping off your own items when they sell, whereas ThredUp handles that work for you for the clothing it accepts in your Clean Out Kit. The tradeoff is that you’re likely to receive a higher per-item commission on pieces you sell on Poshmark, but it does require more time and effort on your part. To shop on Poshmark, simply make an account, list your preferred sizes and start shopping. You’re more likely to find modern vintage pieces via Poshmark rather than true vintage, but shoppers with a keen eye will also be able to find a few designer plus-size pieces hiding in the digital racks, too. Browse more vintage finds via Poshmark.
9. The RealReal
True fashionistas know that The RealReal is the real deal for finding authentic secondhand designer clothing and accessories. While the site has become a must-browse destination for finding vintage Chanel and pre-owned Mara Hoffman pieces, it’s worth noting that the plus-size designer section is a bit lacking. Obviously, a huge reason for this is that the designer fashion industry still largely ignores plus-size bodies, so there’s a small supply available for resale to begin with. Still, with the right email notifications, you might score a true gem, like a Veronica Beard blazer or a Dior skirt. Browse more vintage finds from The RealReal.
10. The Plus Bus
The Plus Bus is a Los Angeles-based boutique that specializes in plus-size new, used and vintage clothing. It was created in 2015 by Jen Wilder and Marcy Guevara-Prete, who saw a need for a secondhand marketplace specifically for plus-size shoppers. Though the brand now has a brick-and-mortar location in Los Angeles, you can also shop all of their curation online, too. The shop carries new, vintage and modern vintage clothes in sizes XL to 5X. Browse more vintage finds from The Plus Bus.
11. Plus BKLYN
Plus BKLYN describes itself as “NYC’s secondhand plus size shop of dreams.” The shop specializes in modern thrifted plus-size pieces (i.e. brands like Eloquii, Unique Vintage and now-defunct Premme) as well as authentic vintage finds for plus sizes in sizes 0X to 6X. If you’re NYC-based, find out how to sell your clothes to Plus BKLYN. Otherwise, take a look at their site to see what’s available right now. You can also shop all items via their Instagram. Browse more vintage finds from Plus BKLYN.
12. Luvsick Plus
Luvsick Plus is a Chicago-based plus-size vintage shop designed for every body to find the perfect vintage pieces in sizes 14 to 26. Though you can browse the shop online, you can also shop in person at Lost Girls Vintage in Chicago. You’ll also find housewares, self and body care and accessories like masks and jewelry. Browse more vintage finds from Luvsick Plus.
13. Cake Plus Size
Cake Plus Size, located in Minneapolis, describes itself as a “fat positive resale shop” that curates secondhand pieces for sizes XL to 4XL and above. If you’re in the market for plus-size vintage swimwear, you’ll definitely want to bookmark this shop. There are plenty of ways to shop if you can’t make it in person, like via Instagram stories, Facebook Live takeovers and the online shop. If you’re local, find out how you can sell your clothes to Cake Plus Size for cash or credit. Browse more vintage finds from Cake Plus Size.
14. Berriez
Berriez was launched in Brooklyn in 2018 as “a curated online vintage shop that celebrates curves, colors and fruit.” The site curates a selection of vintage plus-size finds, sustainably created new designs and modern thrifted and upcycled pieces made using repurposed fabrics. If you’re in the market for a new swimsuit, check out Berriez’ latest collab with Wray, an inclusive, NYC-based fashion brand that describes itself as “fine-arts influenced.” Browse more vintage finds from Berriez.
15. Depop
Depop is another major secondhand resale site for buying and selling clothes. Depop carries everything from designer and vintage pieces to streetwear and sneakers, and the site also has a well-stocked plus-size curation. Depop also carries vintage and pre-loved men’s clothing, which is what makes it different from ThredUp. Create an account to either start shopping or selling on Depop today. Browse more vintage finds from Depop.
