A mother is fed up that her stepdaughter, who she raised as her own, is disrespecting her.
She took to Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum for advice. Her stepdaughter Amy constantly calls the mother lazy. The mom has tried reasoning with her, but Amy’s behavior is a mystery. When Amy continued to act out, the mom refused to do any chores on Amy’s behalf.
“My husband and I share three kids,” the mother wrote. “His daughter and son from his first marriage, who we have full custody of and have lived with full time since they were toddlers, and our daughter. Lately, our oldest, Amy, has been acting out towards me. She’s constantly saying that I’m lazy and do nothing around the house and undermining me in front of her siblings. The other day, when I asked the kids to clean up the mess they left on the table, I heard her tell her brother that I wasn’t their real mom and that they didn’t have to listen to me. I have no idea where this came from as I have always thought of myself as their mom and have done everything but legally adopt them as my own.”
The only chores the kids are required to do is keep their rooms clean. She and her husband take care of the rest.
“Last night, when I asked Amy to clean up some paint supplies she left scattered on the floor, she called me a lazy jerk who expects her to do everything,” the mother said. “I said fine, then she can do her own chores from now on. Sure enough, after dinner, I did everyone’s dishes but hers. I also did laundry this morning but left hers in her hamper. When I told her she had to do her own dishes and laundry, she exploded and went crying to my husband, who said I was being too harsh and singling her out. I’m really at my wit’s end here, I tried asking her if she wants to talk, I’ve tried being nice, I’ve tried being firm.”
Reddit users think the mom was OK to discipline Amy.
“Asking her to keep her room clean is not unreasonable,” someone commented.
“The consequence was in alignment with the offense,” another wrote.
“You’re not her maid,” a person said.
