A Dutch oven is one of the most popular and multi-functional cooking tools you can buy. It comes in a variety of sizes, colors, and, most infamously, brands and prices. For instance, the most well-known and respected Dutch oven brand, Le Creuset, is famous for its premium quality and prices that go up to $685.
Over the past few years, shoppers have learned that there are high-quality options out there that cost far less than Le Creuset. From Amazon Basics to Great Jones, there’s a handful of competitors that are giving Le Creuset a run for its money, and now, Misen’s new crowdfunded Dutch oven has entered the race, and shoppers say it’s putting more expensive options to shame.
Misen 7-Quart Dutch Oven With Grill Pan Lid, $165
Misen has an interesting story that’s unlike most brands on the market. To put it plainly, the brand literally exists because of shoppers’ interest and trust in its products.
With limited kitchen space being a problem so many still face, investing in quality cookware that performs more than one task is more important than ever. Misen took this philosophy and ran with it, raising over $4.2 million to launch its new Dutch oven on Kickstarter back in 2020.
Funded by more than 36,000 backers, this special kitchen workhorse is now available for purchase and set itself apart from its competitors with its unique design. The enameled cast iron Misen Dutch oven comes with an ECI grill pan lid which you can use separately on the stovetop or in the oven. It’s also available with a traditional lid for those who prefer the classic style.
Giving you even more bang for your buck, both styles come with an extra silicone lid and retail for $165 — that’s over $220 cheaper than Le Creuset‘s most comparable option. For perspective, Le Creuset’s 6 3/4 qt. Dutch oven retails for $390. The best-selling brand also does not carry a seven quart option like Misen’s. Its closest sizes are six 3/4 qt. and eight qt.
Recently, Food 52 and Staub also collaborated on a similar 2-in-1 Grill Pan and Cocotte Dutch oven. However, it pales in comparison to Misen’s as it’s extremely small, measuring at just 3.37 quarts.
Misen creates cookware that boasts “the same durability as the ‘luxury’ brands, at a fraction of the price.” This launch saw the brand put this philosophy into action.
“People love their Dutch ovens, and it didn’t seem fair that a durable one could be so inaccessible to home cooks,” Misen explained. “So we made our own.”
The Misen Dutch oven is made of high-quality, crack-resistant enamel that’s built “for a lifetime of use.” It was also stress-tested and outperformed its competition during this trial. Take a look at the photo below to see how it stacked up.
Misen’s Dutch oven currently comes in five colors (blue, black, grey, red and green) and features a lifetime guarantee. So, if anything happens to your Dutch oven, Misen will replace it, free of charge — no questions asked.
Shoppers have also admittedly set aside their Le Creuset Dutch ovens to make room for this new product.
“This was great!” one shopper wrote before adding that she loves the grill pan cover. “I used the Dutch oven to make a pasta sauce, and it came out great. I traded up from my Le Creuset Dutch oven, and I’m never going back!”
Another shopper who’s a professional chef agreed, adding that Misen’s Dutch oven is one of the best she’s ever used. She even said it stacks up well against some of its premium competitors like Staub and Le Creuset.
“I purchased this one because of the large size and price,” the shopper wrote. “I am so impressed! I’ve been using it daily and have nothing but good things to say about it. [I] love the grill top lid, superb enamel with not even a scratch after one month.”
