On this episode of In The Know: Upcycled, style expert and DIY clothing master, Wandy the Maker (@wandythemaker), shows you how to upcycle your favorite childhood quilt into a comfy, fashion-forward hoodie.
What you’ll need:
- Rotary Tracing Wheel
- Pattern Paper
- Thread Snip Scissors
- Rotary Sewing Cutting Set
- Pins
- Jar for Pins
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
- Sewing Needles
- Table
Step 1: Make your hoodie pattern
Start by making your pattern. Wandy lays out an old hoodie on some pattern paper and traces around it, leaving half an inch of seam allowance on the sides, and a full inch on the bottom for the hem. For the arm hole, Wandy uses a rotary tracing wheel to trace the arm seam.
Step 2: Cut and arrange your pieces
Next, using scissors, cut out your pattern pieces individually, and place them on your quilt. Then, cut the quilt according to your pattern.
Step 3: Sew your pieces together
Pin your front and back pieces (body, sleeves, and hood) right sides together, then sew your pieces with your sewing machine using a zigzag stitch, leaving about a quarter of an inch for seam allowance.
Step 4: Attach the sleeves
Line up your sleeve and body seams and pin them together. Then, sew the sleeves onto the body.
Step 5: Attach the hood
Before attaching the hood, fold over and sew the outside edge for a more “clean look.” Once that’s done, line the center seam of your hood with the middle of the neck on the body piece and pin the pieces together. Then, sew them together using a zigzag stitch all the way around.
Step 6: Clean the edges
As a final step, Wandy cleans the edges of the hoodie by sewing hems on the bottom of the body and the ends of the sleeves.
