Real talk: Holiday party season is going to look a little different this year. Sure, anything’s a marked improvement from the stay-at-home orders of 2020, but if you’re still not comfortable heading to a 100-person New Year’s Eve party or a huge potluck that mixes friend groups, you’re not alone. In fact, I’m planning on laying low with my friends and family for the holidays we celebrate — and that requires a very different outfit than a full-blown party look. While I still want to be festive, I’m putting comfort first.
Even more, I decided that anything I purchase for the holiday season needs to pull double duty: In addition to serving as a New Year’s Eve look or a Christmas Eve outfit, each piece needs to be versatile enough to wear once December’s over.
Ahead are three stylish, low-key holiday party outfits to wear if you’re not planning to leave your home, plus the exact pieces to get each look.
A Matching, Festive-Adjacent Set
Ok, this outfit is technically glorified pajamas — but if you don’t tell anyone, you just might be able to get away with it. One of the trendier silhouettes of the upcoming season, this ribbed soft knit top and matching bottoms will be as comfortable as sweatpants for a cozy holiday party spent at home. I love the festive-adjacent color of this set from Source Unknown, which I plan to pair with calf-high boots, festive earrings and some colorful eyeliner for a full holiday party-ready look. Even more, it won’t be one of those items in my closet that I can only take out for one week in December. Instead, I’ll wear it as a base layer under an oversized blazer with heels for work or mix and match the separates with other cozy pieces for weekend errands.
Source Unknown Lightweight Soft Knit, $68
Extra Long Rib Pants, $68
Reike Nen Croc-Effect Boots, $434
Lulu Frost Crystal Chandelier Earrings, $28.50 (Orig. $95)
Colourpop BFF Liquid Liner, $8
A Second-Skin Dress
A little black dress is synonymous with the holiday season — but this time around, instead of going heavy on the little, I’m opting for something that I’ll get extra mileage out of later, too. This midi-length, long-sleeve dress from Reformation will be perfect for Thanksgiving dinner — as well as any date nights on the calendar between now and April — when paired with a red lip, chunky sandals and festive socks. It’ll be even cuter come spring with chunky trainers.
Reformation Robin Cashmere Sweater Dress, $298
Circus By Sam Edelman Miranda Heel, $79
Richer Poorer Vivienne Socks, $11 (Orig. $16)
Mango Flap Chain Bag, $20.99 (Orig. $29.99)
Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick, $9.49
Business Casual Upgrade
This is arguably the least holiday party-forward, but it’s easy to adjust based on where you’re headed: Pair an oversized sweater or vest with flowy pants or a silk midi skirt, then mix and match accessories based on where you’re headed. While knee-high boots with festive socks are an obvious choice (especially if you’re headed to a shoes-off household), you can also pair this look with heels or clogs. A golden smokey eye will make it instantly more festive.
Sézane Alma Cardigan, $145
J.Crew Pull-On Slip Skirt, $78
Zara Heeled Leather Boots, $199.99
Marge Sherwood Bag, $168
