If you’ve never had a fry bread taco, you’re missing out!

Fry bread tacos are made with fry bread, a food that has complicated origins with the Navajo tribe during colonization more than 150 years ago. It has since become a popular pan-Native American dish.

Fry bread is exactly what it sounds like: a circle of puffy fried dough that’s richly filling. Fry bread tacos (also called Navajo tacos) are typically piled high with ground meat and cheese. They’re easy to make once you get the hang of them and are the perfect new dish to try this fall, if you haven’t had them already.

The first step in making fry bread tacos is making the fry bread. Brian Zunigha, @bzuni (Lenape), is an Indigenous TikToker who shares videos about his life, family and, occasionally, his favorite foods. Zunigha shared a video detailing his family’s fry bread taco recipe, and it’s so simple you’ll want to try it right away.

In the video, Zunigha starts by mixing 2 cups of flour, 4 teaspoons of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt. Then he adds 2/3 cup of warm water, mixing the ingredients with his hands until a dough forms.

After letting the dough sit for a bit, he tears off small pieces of dough and stretches them into flat circles. Then he fries each piece of dough in oil over medium heat, flipping them once as they cook. When the fry bread is golden, he removes it from the pan and places it on a paper towel to absorb some of the oil.

Next, Zunigha turns the fry bread into delicious tacos! He starts by adding ground beef, then piles on shredded cheese, tomatoes, onions and green chilies. In a caption, he notes that many people also add lettuce.

As an added bonus, Zunigha notes that you can turn your fry bread into a delicious dessert by topping it with honey instead of taco ingredients.

“I live in New Mexico and we live for Navajo tacos.”

TikTokers jumped into the comments of Zunigha’s video to applaud his recipe, while many viewers also shared their own tips and tricks.

“I live in New Mexico and we live for Navajo tacos. Thank you so much for posting this!” one grateful TikToker commented.

“Not Navajo, but I am Lakota. Try adding a cup of sugar. That’s how my Unci (grandma) makes hers!” another TikToker wrote, adding, “The bread looks great!”

Another TikToker noted, “On the Hopi reservation, they use blue corn flour. I dream about it.”

If you’re interested in learning about more ways to make fry bread tacos, there are plenty of other Indigenous TikTokers to learn from who put their own twists on this classic dish. Some TikTokers add sour cream to their tacos, while others use olives in place of chilies. The best way to figure out what kind of fry bread tacos you like best is to try a few different recipes and experiment with making your own!
