Groom faces backlash over response to his wedding guest’s ‘normal’ dinnertime behavior: ‘It wasn’t a big deal’

A man is wondering if he had poor dinner etiquette at a friend’s wedding.

He consulted Reddit’s “Am I the A******? (AITA)” forum. At the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom served everyone the exact same dish. So he and his wife swapped some of the components they didn’t like. But when the bride and groom caught the Reddit poster and his wife, the groom confronted them.

“AITA for switching food with my wife at a wedding?” he wrote. “My wife and I were invited to a wedding hosted by our close friends. Probably to save money, the same meal was served to everyone, and no changes were allowed to be made unless someone suffered an allergy to the food (lobster, mashed potatoes, green beans).

“I absolutely hate lobster, so my wife and I agreed that she would take my helping of lobster, and I’d take her helping of mashed potatoes. We didn’t tell our friends (they’ve been so busy with the wedding that it seemed frivolous to tell them), and when we went, we simply scooped the respective food onto the other’s plate.”

But the bride and groom spotted their switcheroo and weren’t too excited about it.

“Well, I guess they saw us, and the groom confronted us after the reception for our unprofessional display,” he explained. “My wife and I had our baby with us, so we just left rather than engage in a fight, but both of our friends are mad at us and thought that we acted like children by not eating what was given.”

Redditors felt like the bride and groom overreacted.

“Swapping parts of a meal you don’t like is a pretty normal part of most close relationships. This should have been a nonissue,” a user said

“It wasn’t a big deal, and it shouldn’t be made to be seen as one either,” another wrote

“Out of all the things to stress over, this is just silly,” someone commented
