European starling birds are incredible performers.
That’s a lesson millions of TikTokers are learning, thanks to a user named Farijuana (@farijuana_). In a now viral clip, the bird owner showed her pet’s rendition of the Harry Potter theme music.
The bird, named Zephyr, has drawn over 12 million views with its performance.
For many commenters, one of the most fascinating parts of the video is the large “breath” that
Zephyr takes in the middle. According to Farijuana’s caption, this is because she also takes a breath while whistling that part of the song.“I love how he even mimics the breath I take in the middle of whistling,” she wrote.
European starlings, also called common starlings, are known for their ability to copy all kinds of sounds and whistles. In the wild, they’re able to mimic the calls of up to 20 different birds.
And as pets, they can apply this skill to music too. As
Farijuana has shown in previous posts, Zephyr can also “sing” the music from Woody Woodpecker and The Addams Family. The bird can even copy brief phrases.Overall, TikTokers were blown away by Zephyr’s talents. However, some noted that the whistling was a little off-key.
“He’s so talented,” one user wrote.
“Such a smart baby,” another added.
“Honestly he’s not even in key,” another wrote.
Of course, Zephyr isn’t supposed to be whistling the exact song. Like many mimic birds, it’s copying its owner’s rendition of the music, not the actual song itself.
As impressive as the European starling is, some bird species can easily outshine its skills. There are plenty of songbirds with huge memories, including the brown thrasher.
Those birds are also mimics, and can learn up to 1,100 different song types. Meanwhile, gray catbirds can sample sounds from other animals — such as frogs.
