A man is refusing to pay for his stepsister’s wedding — much to her chagrin.
He asked Reddit’s “Relationship Advice” forum to weigh in. He gave his biological sister $30,000 for her wedding. But when his step-sister was tying the knot too, he didn’t want to contribute. His reasoning is that they’re not close and didn’t really grow up together. But she’s furious.
“My sister is about to get married,” the Reddit poster wrote. “I love my sister a lot, and I knew that, for her wedding, I would definitely help pay for it. It’s something I always wanted to do. I do well for myself, and I love my sister, so I splurged a little bit.
“I’ve decided to commit about $30,000 to her wedding. My sister didn’t ask this of me; it was my own personal choice. My stepsister moved in with us when I was 16, and she was 9. At 18, I moved off to college. We didn’t have a particularly close relationship during that time.”
The issue arose when his stepsister was also getting married.
“We are cordial with one another when we meet each other during family gatherings but don’t really have a close relationship,” the Reddit poster explained. “My stepsister is also getting married and was upset when she realized I wasn’t contributing anything to her wedding.
“She’s now got my dad to come and talk to me about being generous and, frankly, not putting him in a bad spot. I really don’t want to give her money for her wedding (I don’t know her well enough). What do I do?”
Redditors felt like the brother’s decision was perfectly fine.
“Just stick to your guns and say no. There’s not much else you can do,” someone wrote.
“Your stepsister shouldn’t feel so entitled toward your money,” another said.
“You don’t owe anyone else your money,” a person commented.
